Spaces at Te Whaea feature six-metre-high ceilings, fantastic natural light, sprung floors and great acoustics. They are used by orchestras, singers, casting agents, actors, dancers and more.

There is a range of flexible meeting and conference spaces for business and community groups. And our team can help manage your events with our Box Office and Ticketing service.

Drama 1

Drama 1 is the largest ground floor drama studio

Size: 23m x 12 m (Floor Area: 279m2 )

  • Full-length mirrors on far wall
  • Windows along part of both longer walls
  • Whiteboard fixed to one of the long walls
  • Permanent black wool curtains around the perimeter of three walls (including the mirrors and windows)
  • Ceiling approximately 4.4m high with a 48mm pipe grid suspended approximately 200mm below. Please note: weight bearing restrictions apply (use must be arranged with Venue Management)
  • Full-height sliding doors (opposite mirrors) for equipment access and load-in
  • Sound system with speakers and an AUX cord

Drama 2 is a large drama studio with a sprung wooden floor

Size: 16.5m x 12m (Floor Area: 200m2)

  • Full length mirrors mounted on the far wall
  • The internal ground floor studio has fixed windows along the two long walls
  • One set of windows look out to the main entrance and the other set looks into the corridor on the opposite side of the room
  • A whiteboard is fixed to the wall opposite the mirrors
  • A wall mounted TV is permanently installed next to the whiteboard and has connections for USB, HDMI and video cables
  • There are light-coloured curtains and blinds that can cover mirrors and all windows
  • Two fans mounted high on one wall to aid with air flow
  • The space includes a sound system with speakers and an AUX cord attached

Drama 3 is a large, square-shaped studio with a sprung wooden floor

Size: 14.4m x 15m (Floor Area: 216m2)

  • Full length mirrors mounted on one wall
  • Opening windows on exterior wall
  • An interior wall has fixed windows looking into the corridor
  • Ballet barres mounted along the three walls without mirrors
  • Whiteboard fixed to the wall opposite the windows
  • White lines on the floor outline the geometry of the space
  • Wall-mounted TV is permanently installed next to the whiteboard – connections for USB, HDMI and video cables

Dance 2 is an internal studio, with skylights and fixed windows looking into the corridor

Size: 15m x 15.6m (Floor Area: 235m2)

  • There are no curtains or blinds
  • There is a wall-mounted whiteboard in this studio as well as a TV

Dance 3 is located on the Mezzanine (upper) level

Size: 15.3m x 16m (Floor Area: 266m2)

  • An internal studio with fixed windows on three sides and skylights above, which can be covered by blinds
  • Black curtains can be pulled to cover the mirrors
  • There is a wall-mounted whiteboard in this studio
  • This studio contains an air conditioning unit to regulate temperature

Dance 4 is a large, square-shaped studio

Size: 15.3m x 15.3m (Floor Area: 234m2)

  • There is one exterior wall with opening windows and an exterior fire exit door, and one wall of fixed windows looking into the corridor

  • Blinds can cover the internal windows into the corridor

Dance 5 is the smallest dance studio

Size: Approximately 9m x 9m (Floor Area: 90m2)

  • An internal studio with skylights, without other exterior windows or curtains/blinds
  • Often used for private solo practice or by smaller groups

The Plaza The Plaza

The Plaza

A large open-plan atrium space for functions, events or special occasions

Floor Area: 440m2

This is Te Whaea’s central atrium area, used as a common area for students during term time and shared with other users of the building.

It’s ideal as a communal gathering area for workshop/audition registration, functions, displays or as a front-of-house gathering area before or after performances.

The Plaza can be hired for exclusive use under some circumstances.

The floor is polished hardwood. There is one 3-phase power outlet rated at 32 amps, as well as single phase outlets around the space.

Includes: Four moveable seating bars with stools, two mounted TV screens, assorted soft furnishings and plants, skylight and ceiling vents, moveable whiteboard.

The Large Meeting Room

The biggest formal meeting room with space for 12-20 people

Floor Area: 31m2

Great space, suitable for meetings or seminars. This room is furnished with tables and chairs, and includes a wall-mounted TV and whiteboard.

Suitable for meetings of up to 6 people

Floor Area: 13m2

Includes a large, oval table and chairs, and a large flat-screen TV. The room is an internal space, with mostly glass walls that have an etched mid-section to maintain privacy.

Drama 6

Ideal for smaller groups or meetings

Floor Area: 38m2

A rectangular, ancillary space located behind Drama 1. Access can be through adjoining doors. A carpeted, unfurnished space suitable for small rehearsals, private practice or meetings.

It can also be furnished to operate as a meeting room on request. Availability is dependent on activity in Drama 1 (the adjoining space).

Te Whaea Theatre

This is a ‘black box’ style theatre

Floor area: 23.8 metres long x 16.5 metres wide, 398m2

The walls are dark brown and black painted particle board. The grid is a full catwalk access system over the performance space with integrated lighting bars.

The floor is masonite (hardboard) over timber and is painted black. The black wool curtains that surround the space are suspended on a track around the perimeter.

There is one additional tab track for curtain hanging, which spans the middle of the space (running North-South, 16.5m long). Additional drapes include three pairs of full-height 3m wide black wool masking legs.

There is a crossover in the rear corridor by the dock. Full-height sliding doors at the dock end of the theatre provide easy access.

Audio: Te Whaea Theatre has an audio patch system provided between the floor level and the grid allowing for maximum flexibility of patching speaker, microphone and DMX lines.

Audience Seating: There are 6 x independent raked mobile retractable seating modules. These provide a variety of different configurations up to a maximum seating capacity of 150-170 in end stage (proscenium) configuration. Additional rows of seats at ground level can increase capacity by approximately 24 per row.

Height to underside of catwalk: 7.2 metres

Basement Theatre

The internal Basement level studio theatre is a bare concrete space.

Floor Area: 437m2

The theatre is painted black, approximately 437m2 and 4.5m high with an asphalt floor.

This is a black-box space with no exterior doors or windows, and contains eight pillars at 6m centres. Black fabric curtains which can cover all the walls are suspended on a track around the perimeter of the space. These are permanently installed to assist with acoustics and must not be removed from the track.

Entry is through the lobby, accessed via an exterior roller door and an internal hallway. Limited unrated rigging positions are available on scaffolding bars. These are welded to the ceiling between the pillars at about 2m spacing.

The maximum occupancy for this space is 50 people (due to fire regulations) although it can be extended in some circumstances.

Screen Lab Screen Lab Screen Lab

Screen Lab

The Screen Lab is an internal basement-level studio.

Floor area: 109m2

Unfurnished, it’s approximately 12.8m x 9m wide and 5m high with a black vinyl floor and white painted walls.

Suspended approximately 300mm below the ceiling is a 48mm pipe grid. The maximum total loading for the whole grid is 100kg and the maximum point load is 25kg.

Permanently rigged black fabric curtains are suspended on track around the perimeter of the room. The curtains can cover nearly all the walls turning the space all-black. There are no exterior doors or windows.

There is a raised operating position which can be accessed from the stairs in the corridor. Te Whaea Theatre is directly overhead and adjoining spaces are the Production Bay to the East, and the SEEyD Space to the West. There is no audio equipment in this space. Working light in the Screen Lab is diffused fluorescent tubes.

The SEEyD Space

The SEEyD Space is a smaller, rectangular internal basement-level studio.

Floor Area: 96m2

It is a bare space approximately 18m x 4.5m wide and 4.5m high. It has white painted walls and a black asphalt floor. There are no exterior doors or windows.

Drama 10 adjoins The SEEyD Space to the West (accessed by a fire door and a roller door). The roller door can be opened to use this space in conjunction with Drama 10.

Limited rigging points are available and there is some lighting equipment semi-permanently installed in this space along with a simple lighting desk.

Standard lighting is by a centre row of 5 x 85w Giant Edison Daylight Powersaver bulbs.

Drama 10

Drama 10 is an internal basement-level studio.

Floor area: 387m2

It is a bare space approximately 15m x 18m with a particleboard floor (not sprung).

The studio’s ceiling is approximately 4.5m high with 6 x supporting pillars at 6m centres. There is a mirror on one wall and no exterior doors or windows.

A whiteboard is fixed to one of the walls. Access is either through a lobby area via roller doors, fire (crash) doors or one standard interior door.

Adjoining spaces are the SEEyD Space to the east, Basement Theatre lobby to the west and a hallway to the north.

Some sound transmission occurs between Drama 10 and adjoining spaces and the Plaza which is directly above and requires cooperation between users of adjoining spaces.

Our technical spaces can be hired at suitable times and under approved circumstances.
